about

Ruf Dug serves up two dance-floor ready reworks of STR4TA’s ‘Lazy Days (feat. Emma-Jean Thackray)’. The Mancunian producer draws out the 80s Street Soul era influences on the STR4TASFEAR LP while keeping an ear in the club with dubbed-out arrangements, deep-space digi-synths and bottom-heavy 808s. ‘Lazy Days feat. Emma-Jean Thackray’ is out 18th January 2023 on Brownswood Recordings.

The second LP from Gilles Peterson and Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick, saw STR4TA excavate new territory. The nostalgic project with an eye to the future turned its gaze towards the electronic influenced sounds that characterised the music of the UK Street Soul movement of the early 1980s. The first album ‘Aspects’ mined the depths of Brit Funk - the genre at the core of the duo’s musical DNA - whereas STR4TASFEAR embraced the artificial slap of drum machines and the spacious funk of digital synths that also characterised the time. It makes perfect sense then that Peterson decided to tap the production talent of another Street Soul aficionado, Ruf Dug, to remix one of the standout tracks.

STR4TA are without doubt a London band - both Bluey and Gilles were moulded by the city - but the sounds of Street Soul had another centre outside the capital. Manchester played a significant role in the birth of the music with pirate stations like Broadway Sound and Sunset & Buzz FM pushing the genre. Ruf Dug (NTS/Rhythm Section) has been shedding light on this overlooked aspect of the city’s history through his DJ sets and productions, alongside fellow Mancunians Be With Records who reissued the seminal deep-cut ‘Check 4 U’ by Manchester’s Bô’vel. “Lazy Days’ was a rare-groove footstomper powered by the layered vocals and singular trumpet playing of Thackray - the young UK Jazz luminary whose album ‘Yellow’ lit up 2021. In the hands of Ruf Dug it transforms into a different beast with a Mancunian twist.

On the remix, the tightly-wound live instrumentation is swapped out for thumping 808s and 80s inspired synthesisers. The arrangement is spaced out and drenched in delay and the wriggling bass guitar of the original is metamorphosed into a bottom-heavy staccato synth-line. This club-ready release cherry picks from Manchester’s dance music history; dub sirens find their way into the mix and a bouncy syncopated drum-machine replaces the original’s four-to-the-floor. On the flip, Ruf Dug serves up a dubbed out version that places Thackray’s trumpet playing front and centre. The mesmerising brass runs are flanked on either side by floaty pads, electronic bleeps and a high-pitched string drone that brings to mind the work of Manchester dance legends 808 State. The two reworks maintain the original’s energy but bear the hallmark cheeky wink of the northern metropolis.
